Informea vs plastic waste

InforMEA is the United Nations’ database of international environmental policies. It allows anyone who’s active in professional environmental activism to keep track of the many global and regional laws, conventions and projects that aim to keep the planet healthy and human-friendly.

One recurring motif in the grand environmental narrative is, of course, plastic waste. This explainer animation offers a general introduction to InforMEA’s plastic-related content.

This is the third in a series of animations for InfoMEA, after entries on bees and peatlands. The general visual style and some recurring elements had already been established in the previous projects, providing a solid basis to work on.

In this latest video there’s a strong focus on marine environments: wavy open spaces that rely less on detailed biodiversity picture-book scenes like in the bees video and more on light, shadow and abstract shapes. It’s in every way more “liquid” in its look and feel.

The video on bees was intended mostly as a visual mood piece. For the peatlands video we went for a more pragmatic database/policy walkthrough. It was appropriate for the part on plastics to find a nice balance. It offers straightforward formal infographics, underscoring them with figurative scenes.
