Kammerspielgifs

Transferring this old tradition to the new form –animated gifs– the Kammerspielgifs depict conflicted characters in their personal sphere by using extreme formal ambiguity. These characters live somewhere between stillness and motion, depth and flatness (a videogame-like isometric perspective), naturalism and artificiality, banality and drama. The gif format itself has always been an odd hybrid between picture and video.

They are confined in time –an endless loop– and space –a small room.

(The purists among you might note that the animations here are embedded as video files, rather than actual gif format images. For the sake of usability and image quality, we have used the term “gif” in its  cultural rather than technical definition. As of recent years many social media channels by default convert gif formats to display-friendly mp4 video’s. Therefor “gif” can be considered shorthand for any kind of short low-res digital video loop. We don’t want this to be a cop out, so all Kammerspielgifs are also available as true gif files on our Giphy channel.)
